IWIS completed an agreed Recommended Practice in September 2007 which was updated in 2011, bringing terms used in line with SIIS (Subsea Instrumentation Interface Standardisation) www.siis-jip.com. This Recommended Practice is now available to the whole of industry to support the International Standard ISO-13628-6.

The 2011 IWIS Recommended Practice is referenced as IWIS-RP-A2.

The industry again collaborated on updating IWIS IWIS-RP-A2 to account for electrification. The IWIS 2.0 Recommended Practice was released in 2026, and recommends changes for increased electrical power, improved integration to the subsea communications network, adaptable and standardized mechanical interfaces, safety and redundancy considerations, and allows for intermittent power demand and increased data. It should be noted that SIIS RP is being updated into SIIS 2.1 and 3.1; IWIS 2.0 RP was written before completion of SIIS 3.1 RP. The intention of IWIS 2.0 is to align with SIIS 3.1 when available.
